What is Diwali?
Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most vibrant and significant celebrations in India and among the Indian diaspora worldwide. It symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, making it a time filled with joy, family, and traditional customs. Typically celebrated over five days, Diwali includes illuminating homes with diyas (oil lamps), setting off fireworks, and, of course, indulging in delicious sweets and snacks.
Time to Bake!
My son is married to someone from India and they celebrate this holiday. This year, I decided to add a personal touch to their Diwali celebrations by baking a batch of delightful cookies. Baking is one of my favorite pastimes, and what better occasion to channel that energy into making sweet treats that symbolize the joy of the festival? With a pinch of love and a sprinkle of festive cheer, I whipped up some mouthwatering cookies that not only look beautiful but taste even better!
My Cookie Creations
As you can see in the pictures, these cookies are adorned with colorful icing and festive images that reflect the spirit of Diwali. I made them in various shapes—some are elephants, others are squares, and a few are simply delightful circles. Each cookie is infused with flavors like vanilla and rosewater.
The cookies make for an excellent gift. I packaged them in cookie tins and mailed them off to Texas. It’s a heartwarming tradition to share sweets during Diwali, and these homemade cookies surely added a personal touch to David and Vatsal's celebrations. Because nothing brings people together quite like delicious food, right?
Whether you’re celebrating Diwali or simply cherishing the act of baking, these cookies serve as a reminder of joy, warmth, and togetherness. Here's to sweet moments made even sweeter with cookies!

To decorate these cookies, I flooded them with royal icing and let them dry. Then I used stencils which I found on Amazon to spread thick royal icing over the stencil and scrape it off using a plastic scraper. Then I embellished a little with some piped icing and dusted with edible gold glitter dust.
